It is known for towering mountain peaks such as Mitre Peak, several waterfalls such as Sterling and Bowen falls, falling down from the dramatic forest-clad peaks. Cruise is the best way to get upclose to the thundering waterfalls and to enjoy the unbeatable views. Cruises start throughout the day and are more frequent in the afternoon to accommodate people driving from the Queenstown, which is about 4-hour drive from Milford Sound. Many companies offer Milford Sound Cruises and you can combine it with coach day trip from Queenstown or Te Anau. Typical cruise lasts about 2 hours. There are overnight cruise options as well, where you get to spend the night aborad a cruise mariner and wake up in Milford Sound.
