Long trip but worth It
Long time to reach the salt flats. Most people fly to La Paz as there are no direct international flights to Uyuni. Then either you have to wait several hours for your flight to Uyuni or take an eight hour bus.
There are several tour options for touring the salt flats. Typical 1-day tour won’t cover sunrise or sunset and 3-day tours include other attractions like lakes, desert etc. and they are one way tours.
Wet season is the popular season because of the amazing reflective photos but be aware that excessive rains in December and January may cause cancellations.
Train Ruins
Just located outside of Uyuni, it is an unique location with train ruins. It is included in most Uyuni tours and is a good, unique photo-spot.
Gaint Cactus
Included in most Salar de Uyuni tours, Isla Incahuasi is an hour drove into the salt flats. It is home to giant Cacti. You could hike up the hill for panoramic salt flat views backdropped by mountains.
