Milford Sound (Piopiotahi) is a fiord in the Fiordland National Park in the southwest of New Zealand’ s South Island and is one of the New Zealand’ s most stunning attractions. It is known for towering mountain peaks such as Mitre Peak, several waterfalls such as Sterling and Bowen falls falling down from the dramatic forest-clad peaks. Milford Sound is about 4hr drive from Queenstown and 2-hour drive from Te Anau. There are buses available from Queenstown and Te Anau. Popular activities at Milford Sound include 2-hour scenic cruise, kayaking, walks, snorkeling and day tours. Taking a scenic flight or helicopter tour over Milford Sound from Queenstown is also a popular option. Short walks like Foreshore Walk lead to popular photo spots such as Milford Sound Lookout Point where Mitre Peak and its reflection can be beautifully captured. Taking the cruise is the best option to capture several waterfalls including Bowen Falls, Sterling Falls, Giant Gate falls etc. While Milford Sound has several permanent waterfalls, it is even more spectacular if you go on a rainy day or just after it rained. Hundreds of waterfalls appear from every cliff edge making it even more magical.
Milford Sound is an incredible place. It’s a day trip from Queensland and the drive to the Milford Sound is also very scenic. The fiord cruise is about couple of hours. If it’s raining you will see thousands of waterfalls, it’s just an amazing experience.
